We all want to leave a legacy, some evidence that we were here, and made a difference in the world.
Eileen and Joseph Johnson's legacy could help save thousands of lives. The $1.2 million, unrestricted bequest from their estate to The Hospital of Central Connecticut will help pay for a Novalis® radiosurgery system to be used to treat brain tumors and other cancers.
The Johnsons, of Plainville, were longtime generous contributors to the hospital. In 1998, they informed hospital officials that they had included the hospital in their estate plans. That made them members of the hospital''s 1899 Society – a recognition society. Eileen passed away in January 2007, and Joseph a few years prior.
The state-of-the-art Novalis system they''ve helped fund conducts non-invasive stereotactic radiosurgery, which uses highly focused radiation to target tumors and lesions while sparing healthy surrounding tissue. Treatment does not involve incisions, and the patient experiences little pain and no blood loss. The system, expected to be in use by the fall, can also treat tumors near the spinal cord and in other areas of the body.
The American Savings Foundation Radiation Oncology Treatment Center at the New Britain General campus is being expanded to house the unit and treatment area. Total project cost is $5.8 million.
The Hospital of Central Connecticut is grateful for the Johnson family''s wonderful gift. Their vision and generosity in keeping the hospital in their estate plans demonstrates their exceptional commitment to the hospital – and the community.
