How
You Can Help...
William
Liddell's Gift to Nourish the
Growth of the Neighborhood Music
School
|

 |
Last month,
Neighborhood
Music School
learned that
it is the
beneficiary
of a planned
gift from a
member of
the NMS
Board of
Directors
who served
in the
1960s.
William
Liddell was
a prolific
gardener and
an amateur
musician
(recorder
player in
The
Neighborhood
Players),
and parent
of a family
of
musicians.
He gave 104
tons of food
to the
Connecticut
Food Bank
from his
garden over
many years!
During that
time, he
planted the
financial
seeds,
through
investment
in a life
insurance
policy that
brought a
substantial
gift to the
NMS
endowment to
nourish the
growth and
flowering of
future music
students and
music
lovers.
Neighborhood
Music School
was
established
in 1911 as
part of the
settlement
house
movement to
assist New
Haven’s new
and growing
immigrant
population.
It became an
independent,
non-profit
corporation
in 1950 and
flourished
for many
years on
lower Chapel
Street in
the Wooster
Square
neighborhood.
In response
to regional
growth and
expanding
enrollment,
NMS mounted
a successful
capital
campaign to
purchase
land and
build its
own 30,000
square foot
facility
(with 35
studios, 3
classrooms,
recital
hall, &
library) on
Audubon
Street in
1968,
becoming the
first arts
organization
in the
city’s
Audubon Arts
District. In
addition to
this main
facility,
NMS holds
weekly
classes for
students at
several
public,
parochial,
and private
schools, and
at branches
in Guilford
and in
Woodbridge.
NMS is one
of the 10
largest
community
arts schools
in the
nation with
a budget of
$3.6
million. |
